How does the brain repair itself after a stroke? Is there a way to strengthen the brains functioning? Are there deeper, physical reasons for the decisions we make? These are only a few of the questions that I have about the brain.

There are several books that have attracted my attention and have given me some answers:

My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal JourneyMy Stroke of Insight:  a Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey by Jill Bolte Taylor - ISBN 9780452295544

This is the memoir of a neuroanatomist who had a massive stroke. She could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. The anatomy and functions of the brain can be difficult to understand. Her diagrams and descriptions were helpful. The struggle to rebuild her life and the insights she drew from the experience were inspiring. Having family and friends to help you during times like that can enhance your ability to recover.

The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph From the Frontiers of Brain ScienceThe Brain That Changes Itself:  Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science by Norman Doidge - ISBN 9780670038305

It is reassuring to know that the functions of the brain can be strengthened just like a weak muscle after a trauma. The cases he presents go beyond what I thought possible in recovering after a stroke or other brain injuries and limitations. With persistent effort, changes can be made. There is always reason for hope.

Magnificent Mind at Any Age: Natural Ways to Unleash Your Brain's Maximum PotentialMagnificent Mind at Any Age: Natural Ways to Unleash Your Brain’s Maximum Potential by Daniel G. Amen - ISBN 9780307339096

There are things we all can do to strengthen and increase the capacity of our brain. This book seemed like a good place to find some answers. Using natural methods seemed the best way to do it. He offers a range of options, for different stages of your life.  My plan is to make a few changes at a time.  Hopefully, incorporating a few changes in my life is better than doing nothing.

    Great reviews - thanks, Rosemary!

If you liked Jill Bolte Taylor’s book, you would also really enjoy Daniel Pink’s “A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future”.

Pink make the case that inventiveness and empathy are actually much more vital to our work skill set these days than traditional ‘hard’ skills. It is a great read.
