I have been looking for a good children’s book to give my niece for Christmas. In looking through my own bookshelf, I came across one of my favorite children’The Velveteen Rabbit or How Toys Become Reals books, The Velveteen Rabbit or How Toys Become Real, by Margery Wiliams. It is a classic story that should read by adults and children. I enjoy reading it again every few years.

It is a story about a toy rabbit who becomes the favorite toy of a little boy. He learns what it takes to become real from another toy in the nursery, the Skin Horse, who is old and wise and real. He learns that being loved over a long period of time makes you real. Instead of looking bright, shiny and new, you can look old and used. But being loved makes it worth it. It might hurt. But when you are real you don’t mind getting hurt.

There areĀ  lessons in this book for children and adults. My hope is that, as a
child, she will like the story. As she grows up, hopefully she will understand the deeper message and what makes it a great story.
