Loving Frank
After reading Leigh’s review a few weeks ago, I decided that I really needed to read this book. I’ve been a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright for a long time, so it was really interesting to learn more about his relationship with Mamah Cheney, a married woman who Frank met while designing a house for her and her husband in the early 1900s (while Loving Frank is a work of fiction, it was based on their true story). I was impressed and surprised by how ahead of her time she was: she was college educated, worked as a librarian, married later in life, divorced her husband, traveled the world, and lived (unmarried) with Frank. As fascinating a character as she was, I just couldn’t get past the fact that she had abandoned her children, although at the time, I guess there was no other way to follow one’s own dreams. It was really sad, and the ending was just unbelievable; even though I knew what happened to Mamah, to read it was still shocking.
My only complaint was that there wasn’t enough about Frank in the book. I guess I need to read a biography - can anyone recommend one?
