darkplacesHave you ever read a book that made you flinch as you were reading it? That was the case for me with Dark Places. Even though what I was reading made my stomach turn at times, I kept turning the pages—almost reading with just one eye opened and the other scrunched to the point of almost shut. I was motivated by some odd sense of curiosity…Who could perform such a horrible murder? This book certainly does take the reader and the main character to some “dark places.”

As the story unfolds, Libby Day was 7 years old when her mother and two older sisters were brutally murdered in their home. Only Libby and her brother, Ben, survived the annihilation. Libby is forced to be an “eyewitness” to the crimes and implicates Ben as the killer. Years later, Libby is 31 and penniless. She is contacted by a group of crime enthusiasts called “The Kill Club” who would like to convince her that her brother is innocent. This triggers a series of events that makes Libby revisit that harrowing night. What she finds out through interviews and flashes of memories is staggering.

I guess I knew somehow that an injustice would be revealed and that is also what motivated me to keep reading the story. The ending is so surprising; I never would have suspected it. This is a wild and uncomfortable ride of a read if you dare to take part in the journey.
