Commencement
This book includes one of my favorite formulas of all time: a group of college roommates who become lifelong friends.
This is the story of Ceclia, Bree, Sally, and April, students at Smith College who live in the same dorm freshman year and become best friends, despite being totally different from one another. Cecilia is the one who wants to be everyone’s friend and confidant. Bree is the gorgeous Southerner who arrives at Smith engaged to her highschool sweetheart. Sally is the rich girl whose mom just died. And April is the radical feminist who works her way through college. I really loved this book because it was a fun and easy read, but also because it reminded me so much of my own college experience at another women’s school. While my college (and post-college) days were not nearly as exciting as the ones in Commencement, it was fun to kind of relive those years through these fictional characters.
I keep hearing people compare Commencement to The Group by Mary McCarthy, which somehow I have somehow managed never to read. What do you think, do I need to read it?
